About Co-Laboratories https://www.colaboratories.co.uk/

Co-Laboratories is an acting non-profit, funded partly by Camden Council and private sector money to enable companies in Biotechnology to access Laboratory space. Traditionally companies must be a certain size and commit to long, expensive leases, which means many young businesses are unable to try things out and can fail. We aim to change this through providing flexible space and services to companies to help them get going, as well as providing an environment that means they can meet people that will further their growth.
About the role

We are looking for an individual to help us with our first site and become a key part of our offering in London. Ideally you’ll be interested in science or technology, but it is not essential for you to have any background in it. We also collaborate with other laboratory sites, so you’ll have an interest in working with other facilities and partner managers.

In this role, you'll be responsible for maintaining the various workplace facilities to make sure they meet the requirements of the business and its residents. This includes managing security, cleaning, and technology. Since we are a laboratory workspace, this may involve learning how to use and do basic checks on various bits of scientific equipment. You will also have a customer-facing role, with scope to advertise the site and help running events. We would like you to be the friendly first face people see on our site and enjoy learning about all the companies and what they are up to! There is scope to expand this role and make it your own and help with events we run, but we are also happy for someone that wants a simple day to day job with modest expectations too. In the future, we might be able to offer you bonuses, pay rises or commission for other tasks you take on, so please feel free to ask about this.

Duties

• Supervising contractors and letting them into the building, helping them with parking and finding our location
• Managing the regular cleaning, maintenance, grounds and security as needed (this should be fairly simple checking of the current processes)
• Making sure the essential amenities, such as water and heating, are in order, contacting suppliers and providing meter readings as needed
• Making sure that the standards of equipment are maintained (by following provided instructions)
• Support with managing budgets in a cost-effective way
• You may want to help with new projects involving local schools or residents
• You may help organise renovations or other projects
• Assisting organisations when relocating to our space or leaving our space
• Helping companies to sign up to membership
• Fielding basic questions from tenants and making decisions on whether you need to elevate their concerns
• Ensuring the community spirit is maintained and reporting back on issues or improvements
• If you have an interest in this, you may be updating the website with news or writing posts and blogs, as well as ensuring it is up to date
• When we start to train technicians, you would be welcome to learn about those roles and potentially help manage their organisation
• If you find professional training courses relevant to your role, we would be happy to support you attending these
• We often apply for grants, either ourselves or on behalf of companies or the community, you could be involved in writing, finding or applying to these

Essential criteria

*Please note – this role is only open to applications from CAMDEN residents aged 18+*
• Great Communication – you will have to talk to lots of people, from scientists to contractors and council members
• Organisation – you will need to keep an eye on the calendar and scheduling and ensure things don’t clash
• Customer service – you will run tours of the site and encourage people to apply to join the membership
• Basic maths and English – since you will need to communicate to tenants and contractors, as well as ensure payments are made correctly and interactions documented as needed
• Emergency handling – if something comes up when you’re on site or out of hours and you are notified and available, you will alert the correct people quickly or find out who can fix the problem. We won’t expect you to do this yourself, but we do need to know we can rely on you to not let problems go unaddressed. Hopefully nothing will happen, but examples might be a freezer or equipment alarm going off, spills or burst water pipes.
• Following risk assessments – you don’t need to have seen these before, but it is essential you can read and understand them when given to keep everyone safe

Desirable criteria

• Social media work/newsletters – ideally you will draft these to be signed off by the CEO. If you have done this before, we’d love to know about it
• Decision making – generally all decisions will need to be signed off by the CEO, but if something comes up and you can take initiative then we’d love this too
• Experience in a customer facing role – please let us know if you’ve done something like this before and have ideas of how you can use this experience
• Sourcing suppliers or contractors – we may wish to change suppliers from time to time to ensure we get the best deals for our tenants and keep costs low
• Budget management – if you have experience in this already that would be great, but we are happy to teach you if not.
• First aid or fire safety training – if you have a current certificate for either of these that’s great, otherwise we will send you on a course. Refresher courses can also be arranged.
• Some scientific experience is desirable, but not required. Even if it is volunteering or a casual interest in watching or reading about technology.
